Wigs are the new gold! Especially during hot seasons when you can easily remove them to let cool air into your scalp. However, owning a wig is a serious commitment as it requires proper care and attention.

Whether you prefer synthetic or human hair wigs, maintaining their shine and durability can be easy with just a few simple steps. Here are some tips to help you keep your wigs looking fabulous for longer.

Wash them after 6 to 8 wears

After wearing your wigs for about 8 times in a row, it must have absorbed some dirt, oil or product build up. Follow these simple steps on how to wash the

  • Fill a basin with lukewarm water and add a small amount of shampoo. Use a wig shampoo specifically formulated for synthetic or human hair wigs, depending on the type you have.
  • Submerge the wig and gently swish it around, being careful not to rub or twist the hair.
  • Rinse thoroughly with clean water until all shampoo is removed.

Use a good conditioner

After washing, it’s important to condition your wig to keep it soft, smooth, and manageable.

  • Apply a small amount of wig conditioner, avoiding the roots if your wig is synthetic. For human hair wigs, you can apply conditioner from root to tip.
  • Leave the conditioner on for a few minutes, then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.

Proceed to dry it

Once your wig is clean and conditioned,

  • Gently pat it dry with a towel to remove excess water. Avoid wringing or squeezing the hair, as this can cause damage.
  • For synthetic wigs, place it on a wig stand or a towel-lined surface to air dry.
  • Human hair wigs can be dried with a blow dryer on a low heat setting or left to air dry naturally.

Style it to your taste

Styling your wig is where the fun begins! Whether you prefer sleek and straight or bouncy curls, you can achieve your desired look with ease.

  • For synthetic wigs, avoid using heat styling tools as they can damage the fibers. Instead, use a wig brush or comb to gently detangle and style the hair.
  • Human hair wigs can withstand heat styling, so feel free to use a flat iron, curling iron, or blow dryer to create your desired hairstyle.
  • If you do not know how to do this by yourself, you can visit the salon and have a professional style it for you.

Store them properly If you want to maintain the quality of your wigs when not in use, store your wig on a wig stand or in a breathable wig bag away from direct sunlight, heat, and humidity. This will help prevent tangling, matting, and frizzing, ensuring your wig stays looking fresh and fabulous for longer.
