Periods aren’t always the “wonder of womanhood” we see in fancy ads. For many women, that time of the month feels more like a battle of sharp cramps, aching backs, pounding headaches, mood swings, and the constant need to stay on top of hygiene. If you’ve ever wished you could just skip the whole thing, you are not alone.
But while you can’t stop your periods, you can make them less stressful. Here are some practical ways to prepare and manage those tough days.
1. Track your cycle
Knowledge is power. Use a period app like Flo, Clue, or even a simple calendar reminder to note your start and end dates. Knowing when your period is due helps you stock up on pads, tampons, or menstrual cups in advance. It also lets you spot unusual changes that may need a doctor’s attention.
2. Stock your comfort kit
Create a little “period box” you can reach for when the cramps hit. Your period box should contain the following:
- Pain relievers: Ibuprofen or mefenamic acid (always follow dosage and check with your doctor).
- Heat source: A hot water bottle or a microwavable heat pack can work wonders.
- Treats: Dark chocolate or a favourite snack, sometimes a little indulgence helps.
- Pads & Wipes: Keep extras in your handbag or car.
3. Eat smart before and during
Your food choices matter. A week before your period, cut back on salty meals, even those late-night suya cravings to reduce bloating. Load up on:
- Leafy greens like ugwu and spinach for iron.
- Fruits rich in vitamin C (oranges, tangerines) to boost mood and fight fatigue.
- Warm teas like ginger or chamomile to ease cramps and calm your stomach.
4. Move even when you don’t feel like it
It sounds unfair, but light exercise really helps. A short walk, gentle stretches, or yoga can release endorphins, which are natural painkillers. If the thought of jumping around feels impossible, even simple breathing exercises can bring relief.
5. Dress for comfort
Choose loose, breathable clothing every time. Cotton underwear is your best friend, and dark colours give peace of mind on heavy-flow days. Keep a spare outfit/underwear in your bag if you’ll be out for long hours, just in case. Your body is doing a tough job. Give yourself permission to rest and dress in what makes you comfortable.
If you apply these tips, you will definitely have a less uncomfortable period in your next cycle. Flow with ease, girlies!
