Smelly feet are more common than you think and there’s nothing to be ashamed about.
Your feet have plenty of sweat glands, and when sweat mixes with bacteria, especially inside warm, closed shoes, that familiar unpleasant smell can show up. If you struggle with this, you don’t need to get fancy products to deal with it. A few simple habits and home remedies can help keep your feet fresh and your shoes smelling a lot better.
- Give your feet a proper wash
This sounds obvious, but washing your feet quickly in the shower isn’t always enough. Take a little extra time to wash between your toes and around your nails with soap and water. Then dry them properly, especially between the toes and this is because bacteria love warm, damp places.
- Try a salt-water soak
A warm salt-water soak is an easy way to give your feet some extra care. Add some salt to a bowl of warm water and soak your feet for about 10–15 minutes. Afterwards, rinse if needed and dry them properly. Don’t have a fancy foot spa? Your regular basin will do just fine.
- Don’t wear the same socks all day
If your socks are soaked with sweat by midday, changing them can make a huge difference. Go for clean, breathable socks and change them daily or more often if your feet sweat heavily. And please, let your socks dry properly before wearing them again.
- Let your shoes breathe
Your shoes need a break too. If possible, avoid wearing the same pair every day. Give them enough time to dry out before wearing them again. After taking them off, leave them somewhere airy instead of immediately throwing them into a closed wardrobe. A little fresh air can go a long way.
- Try baking soda for your shoes
Baking soda can help absorb moisture and reduce odour. Sprinkle a small amount inside your shoes and leave it overnight. Shake or brush it out before wearing them.
- Keep your toenails and feet tidy
Sometimes, foot odour can linger because dirt and dead skin build up around the feet and toenails. Trim your toenails regularly and gently remove dead skin when needed. A simple foot-care routine can make your feet feel cleaner and fresher. If you spend most of the day in closed shoes, give your feet a chance to breathe when you can. At home, wear slippers or go barefoot for a while if it’s safe and comfortable.
- Pay attention if the smell won’t go away
Sometimes, persistent foot odour is more than just sweat. If you also notice itching, peeling, cracks, redness or changes to your toenails, you may have a fungal infection or another skin problem. In that case, home remedies may not be enough. Speak to a pharmacist or healthcare professional so you can get the right treatment. Smelly feet are nothing to be embarrassed about. The trick is to keep them clean, dry and well-ventilated.
